Diversity is a Practice, Not a Concept at Nonotuck

At Nonotuck, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI & B) are not just values we embrace—they are integral to our culture. This commitment to inclusion is woven throughout the organization, with our DEI & B committee acting as a driving force in our quest for an equitable and welcoming workplace.

Whether it’s a documentary on an Asian-American photographer and innovator or a TED talk on Hispanic identity, the committee regularly provides opportunities to learn, celebrate, and discuss DEI & B concepts openly. The DEI & B committee also provides numerous resources, including event listings, local business directories for businesses owned by people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community, and articles exploring the history and concepts of DEI & B.

In the past three years, three of our staff members—Committee co-chairs Nichole Bourke and Jannelle Robinson, and Clinician Ronda Jones Tobey—have earned the Association of Developmental Disabilities Providers’ Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging awards.

Nichole shares that her work co-chairing the committee is crucial because “people need to feel understood, and people need understanding. To me, that is the only way change will occur.” She adds, “It feels good to be a voice for people who are not vocal or are afraid to share how they feel about being different and wanting to be accepted.”

Jannelle echoes this sentiment, noting, “Nonotuck’s collaborative and celebratory approach to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is unique. We strive to make sure every voice is heard. Even when discussing difficult topics, we find ways to celebrate our diverse community. I believe that we cannot achieve wellbeing in our own lives or as a community without diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

“At Nonotuck, we believe that embracing the unique perspectives and experiences of our community not only enriches the work we do but also ensures that every voice is heard and valued,” says Nonotuck President/CEO George H. Fleischner. “Our commitment to fostering an environment that is not only kind and civil but where people can learn, grow, and celebrate each other strengthens us as an organization. DEI & B is more than an initiative—it’s a commitment to shaping a more inclusive and compassionate world for all.”
