Video Spotlight on Shared Living: Marilyn & Adam

In shared living, a caregiver is matched with a person with a disability so they can create a home life and a valued relationship. It can be a long-term or a short-term commitment, but in either case, the service is personalized to the needs of the person receiving care.

“Shared living is a big decision,” Marilyn says. “You have to be committed.”

One of the key goals of shared living is to help the person receiving shared living services participate in community and family activities. For Adam, that includes playing music, going to church and out to dinner, and swimming at the YMCA.

Nonotuck helps make sure shared living providers have the skills and resources they need and also helps make sure the voice of the person receiving services is heard. Marilyn said she appreciates the support Nonotuck gives shared living providers.

“If anything happens out of the ordinary, you can call 24/7 and they will be there for you,” she said.

With Nonotuck’s support, all the people living in a shared living household work to develop authentic, loving and respectful relationships of mutual dependence.
